Overview

Lumbini is a Buddhist pilgrimage site located in southern Nepal, near the Indian border. It holds immense historical and religious significance as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism. According to Buddhist tradition, Queen Mayadevi gave birth to Prince Siddhartha in the sacred Lumbini gardens in 623 BCE. The area has been revered by Buddhists for centuries, and archaeological evidence confirms human settlement dating back to around 1000 BCE. Lumbini is one of the four main pilgrimage sites for Buddhists, along with Bodh Gaya (India), Sarnath (India), and Kushinagar (India), which are associated with the life of Gautama Buddha.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lumbini comprises the sacred garden, monasteries, and archaeological remains, providing visitors with an opportunity to explore the historical and cultural significance of the area. In addition to its religious importance, Lumbini offers visitors a unique cultural experience. The Lumbini International Monastic Zone features monasteries built in various architectural styles, reflecting the diversity of Buddhist traditions from around the world. Visitors can observe and participate in Buddhist rituals, meditation practices, and cultural programs organized by these monasteries. Furthermore, Lumbini has become a symbol of peace and harmony, attracting visitors who seek spiritual enlightenment and a deeper understanding of Buddhist teachings and values.

We recommend having cash of around USD 15-20; it should suffice for any additional costs you may need for a day.

Generally travelling solo does cost more compared to traveling with a group, as you’ll be responsible for covering all costs independently that includes food, accommodation, transportation and even leverage in negotiation. However, our program is structured to minimize additional expenses for solo travelers, requiring additional costs only for private trips or in the event of tour date postponements.

It's advisable to dress modestly out of respect for local customs and traditions, especially when visiting religious sites such as temples or monasteries. While there isn't a strict dress code for most attractions, it's best to avoid clothing that is too revealing or inappropriate for a cultural setting. If we'll be visiting any sites with specific dress code requirements, such as temples or religious monuments, we’ll surely inform you in advance so you can dress accordingly.

We advise against consuming street food in Nepal without consulting us first, as only a few vendors maintain proper hygiene standards. Additionally, it's important to take precautions such as wearing a pollution mask during tours, applying sunscreen and wearing a sun hat to shield yourself from the sun's rays, and only drinking filtered water to ensure your safety and well-being.

Tipping is customary during treks in Nepal but less common during tours. While Nepal doesn't have a strong tipping culture, it's entirely optional if you choose to tip and the amount is at your discretion.
