As an alternative to the traditional Annapurna and Manaslu Circuit treks, combining both regions into a single trek which is connected to the Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) provides adventurers with a unique experience, guiding them through the diverse landscapes, vegetation, and cultures that these two regions offer. Both regions have their own unique beauty, with occasional intersections but a constant promise of unique daily encounters. 

 

Annapurna Circuit trek is famous for its varied topography, adverse climatic conditions, and culturally enriching villages. The Annapurna Massif represents the central core of the great Himalayan arc and is among the world's most sought-after trekking routes. On the other hand, Manaslu Circuit is one of the most serene trails Nepal has to offer. Combining breathtaking scenery, cultural interactions, and minimal crowds, this off-the-beaten-path of Manalu promises an authentic experience of what it's like living in the Himalayas. 

 

The fusion of Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit  is a lengthy, strenuous trekking experience, that takes adventurers through elevated alpine meadows of Manaslu and Annapurna region, across even loftier mountain passes such as Larkya La Pass (5,160m) and Kang La Pass (5,320m). View of Mount Manaslu and Annapurna is the obvious highlight of this trek. But this trek is more than just a journey through breathtaking landscapes. It’s an exploration of a unique Himalayan culture and way of life that is nearing extinction.

  • Before reaching Jagat we come across small Gurung and Magar villages scattered as we start to ascend from Machhakhola. 
  • After approximately two more hours of trekking on an easy trail, arrive at Jagat, situated at an altitude of 1340 meters.
  • Check into your accommodation and retire to your cozy room.

  • We start today’s trek after breakfast by descending to Dudh Pokhari.
  • Continue the trek passing by the acreage of Salleri enjoying views of the Himalayas in distance.
  • Crossing numerous suspension bridges and a steep uphill trail, our trek takes us to the village of Philim, where the MCAP checkpoint is located.
  • Just before we reach Nyak, the trail splits towards Tsum Valley Trek and Larkya La Pass.
  • From Nyak, ascend to Pewa then further uphill to our destination, Deng village, following the Deng River upstream.

  • From Deng, the trail ascends and descends repeatedly as we make our way to Bihi Phedi which takes us around 2 hours.

  • Take a well-deserved rest while soaking in the peaceful mountain ambiance of this Tibetan village.

  • Enter a gorgeous deep forest of blue pine, oak, and rhododendron trees in the first hour of the walk.
  • Today’s adventure begins by trekking below an immense overhanging rock mountain formation.
  • Pass under a striking stone archway, marking our entry into the village of Namrung, renowned for its traditional Tibetan-style houses.
  • After a lunch break in Namrung, head to the village of Lihi climbing a nearly vertical trail for 1.5 hours taking in lovely views of the Himalayas and abodes en route.
  • With crisp mountain peak views accompanying us, continue on to Sho Village from Lihi and Lamagaon, crossing the Hinan River originating from Linda Glacier.
  • After crossing a small stream from Sho, we’ll arrive at the large Tibetan settlement of Lho village where we will be staying overnight.

  • Begin the hike by visiting the Lho Ribang Monastery against the backdrop of  Mt. Manaslu, Manaslu North and Naike Peak.
  • After around 2 hours of hiking from Lho we arrive at the scenic Shyala Kharka surrounded by towering peaks like Ngadi Chuli and Hiunchuli.
  • From  Shyala, the trail ascends slightly before dropping down towards a Thosang river then continuing our descent for around 1.5 hours until we arrive at the large, historically significant village of Samagaon. 
  • Spend the night resting in this beautiful village, our stopover for the day.

  • Spend an acclimatization day in the village of Samagaun, allowing your body to adjust to the higher elevation and thin air.
  • Take this opportunity to explore the village of Samagaon and interact with the local people.
  • We have two hiking options today. Either we are going to visit Pungyen gompa and Birendra Lake which will take us around 5 hours or we will trek to the Manaslu Base Camp which will take us 7 to 8 hours for a round trip.
  • Whichever option you choose, take the day to rejuvenate, acclimatize to the altitude, and prepare for the coming days of trekking.

  • Our destination for the day is Dharamashala, also known as Larke Phedi. It’s a cozy place that offers a warm welcome with food and a place to rest our tired feet.

  • Gear up for a climb that leads to the Larkya La Pass. Standing at a whopping 5,160m, the pass offers panoramic views of several majestic mountains - Himlung, Cheo, Kang Guru, and the great Annapurna II to name a few.
  • The descent begins from Larkya La Pass, and the trail becomes easier to walk in, opening to a small meadow before we reach the village of Bimthang.

  • From Bimthang we will descend to the headwaters of the Dudh Khola, crossing it on a wooden bridge. You will feel the thrill of the rushing water beneath your feet.
  • As you trek, take a moment to look around. The panoramic views of Manaslu, Manaslu north, Cheo Himal, and Himlung Himal are absolutely breathtaking.
  • Your next stop is Sangore Kharka meadow. It’s a downhill walk for about 30 minutes through the forest. The lush greenery and the chirping of birds make it a pleasant journey.
  • After a walk of less than an hour through fields and stands of rhododendron and oak trees, you’ll reach Tilije. It’s a multi-ethnic community settlement, a perfect place to rest and soak in the local culture.
  • We then head towards Thonje, from where we take a turn towards west to the trail of Annapurna Circuit. 
  • Spend the evening unwinding and enjoying the peaceful surroundings of Danakyu, where we will be staying overnight.

As the day winds down, we'll head back to our accommodation in Manang Village for a well-deserved night's rest.

  • We start our trek from Manang towards Yak Kharka, following a trail that leads out of the Marshyangdi valley.
  • Cross a stream and ascend to Tenki village, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountains as we climb up.
  • Pass through the small village of Gunsan, characterized by houses with flat mud roofs, and observe yak and horse pastures along the way and then we cross a small river on a wooden bridge and make our way up the spectacular valley towards Yak Kharka.

  • Spend the evening stargazing in the clear mountain sky, marveling at the beauty of the cosmos above Yak Kharka.

  • Today we start the day's trek before sunrise, aiming to reach Thorong La Pass by 9 to 10 AM to avoid potential weather complications.

  • Begin the descent from Thorong La Pass towards the holy village of Muktinath, known as the place of nirvana.
  • Explore Muktinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, featuring 108 waterspouts believed to cleanse sins. We then visit the Jwala Mai Temple with its eternal flame, revered by both Hindus and Buddhists.
  • Take time to soak in the spiritual atmosphere of Muktinath, finding solace amidst the sacred surroundings.
  • Rest well and rejuvenate your body and spirit, knowing that you've completed an arduous yet rewarding trek through the Himalayas and experienced the spiritual sanctuary of Muktinath.

  • Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit trek is physically demanding, involving long hours of walking at high altitudes. Prioritize cardiovascular fitness, strength, and endurance in your training routine.

Altitude Sickness 

  • Understand the symptoms of altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness - AMS) and be aware of the risks associated with ascending to high altitudes.
  • Acclimatization is crucial for your body to adjust to the increasing altitude.
  • Headache, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath are common symptoms of altitude-related sickness. If you notice any of the signs, consult your guide and follow their directions.

Weather Condition

  • The best times to trek the Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit are autumn (mid-September to November) and spring (March to early June). Temperature varies from 20°C (60°F) to -9°C (15.8°F) during March and early June, and during the peak seasons of September and November, it is around 22°C (71.6°F) to -5°C (23°F).
  • Trek in the favorable seasons and keep away from the rainy season (July and August). In the cold months of January and February, the temperature can drop to -16°C (3.2°F) and can be a little harsh in the mountains.
  • Traveling during bad weather conditions is the worst scenario possible, so always read the weather forecast or travel during peak seasons.

Elevations

The elevation factor poses a significant challenge throughout the trek. Altitude exceeding 3,000m most of the trek is dizzying for most people. Since most individuals aren't accustomed to such heights, the journey incorporates acclimatization days. The ascent in Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit  is deliberately slow to allow for acclimatization and prioritize safety over speed.

 

Typically, daily elevation gains will fall within the 400-800m range. After days with substantial gains and higher altitudes, there's a pattern of including acclimatization days. These days serve a dual purpose, providing time for sightseeing and exploring the surrounding areas.

Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit Trek is a trekking activity done around the world’s 8th highest peak Manaslu and the Annapurna Massif, which takes us through some of the most lush Himalayan vegetation as well as the most arid landscapes that Nepal offers.

The most common way to start the Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit Trek is by driving to Machhakhola from Kathmandu. From there on you can begin trekking through the Manaslu Region first then join the Annapurna circuit from midway. The trek typically takes around 20 days.

The best time to trek the Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit is during the pre-monsoon (spring) season (March to early June) and post-monsoon (autumn) season (Mid September to November) when the weather is relatively stable, and the skies are clear.

You will need two permits: MCAP and ACAP Permit. Additionally, you will need a TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card.

The trek is challenging, and a good level of physical fitness is required. Regular cardiovascular exercises and strength training are recommended to prepare for the altitude and the demanding terrain.

Altitude sickness is a condition that occurs at higher elevations due to a decrease in the amount of oxygen. To prevent altitude sickness, it's essential to acclimatize properly, stay hydrated, and ascend gradually. If symptoms persist, descending to a lower altitude is crucial.

Essential items include sturdy trekking boots, warm clothing, a good backpack, a sleeping bag, and a first aid kit. It's essential to pack light but be prepared for changing weather conditions.
